Set up email for your domain

This tutorial gives you a working address on your own domain, such as alex@example.com, that receives mail and sends it. You order Mail Hosting, prove the domain is yours by publishing its DNS records, create a mailbox and sign in to it in webmail or a mail app. Each section ends with something you can check before you go on.

It costs the Mail Hosting plan you choose. The order page shows each plan's price with the mailboxes, storage and domains it includes (How Mail Hosting and SMTP Relay are billed). If MX, SPF or DKIM records are new to you, read How email reaches an inbox first.

• A Coritan account. Create an account if you have none, then sign in.
• A domain whose DNS records you can change. When its zone is on Coritan in the same account, Coritan publishes the records for you. Put a website online shows how to get one.
• If the domain already receives mail somewhere else, read Move a domain that already receives mail first: new mail follows the domain's MX records as soon as they change.

1. In the dashboard, go to Email and select Order Mail Hosting.
2. Under Plan, choose a plan. Each one shows how many mailboxes it holds, the storage each mailbox gets and how many domains it takes, such as 5 mailboxes · 10 GB each · 1 domain.
3. When the plans sell more than one billing cycle, choose one with the buttons beside the Plan heading.
4. Under Domain, enter your domain in First domain, such as example.com.
5. Check the summary under Your order, then select the button under it. It reads Place order and pay when you pay on the next page, and Place order when your credit pays for it.
6. If the order's page reads Order placed, payment due, pay under Pay invoice.

The service appears on the Email page with the status pending, then provisioning while Coritan sets it up, then active. Coritan emails you when it is ready (Order Mail Hosting or SMTP Relay).

1. On the Email page, open the service, then the Domains tab. Your domain is there as the primary domain. Select it to open its page.
2. Publish the records that the DNS records card lists:
   • When the domain's zone is on Coritan in this account, there is nothing to do. The card reads We publish these into your DNS zone and keep them up to date.
   • Anywhere else, create the ownership TXT record at your DNS provider first, then the other records under Needed to receive mail and Needed to send mail. The records under Recommended can wait. Select Verify now, reload the page, and create the two DKIM records that the card now lists.
3. Select Verify now and read the message.

The message reads example.com is verified., and on the Domains tab the domain shows Verified, with Ownership, MX, SPF and DKIM ticked. When it reads example.com is still pending:, fix the problem it names and select Verify now again. Coritan also checks pending domains about every ten minutes (Add a domain to Mail Hosting).

1. Select the Mailboxes tab, then Create mailbox….
2. In Name, enter the part of the address before the @, such as alex, and choose your domain under Domain.
3. Keep the share of storage that Quota (GB) starts with, or change it.
4. Under Password, choose Generate a strong password.
5. Select Create mailbox.

A dialog shows the mailbox's Address, its Password and its IMAP, SMTP and Webmail settings. Copy the password now, because Coritan shows a generated password only once. The mailbox appears on the Mailboxes tab (Create and manage mailboxes).

To use webmail in a browser:

1. Go to Webmail.
2. Enter the mailbox's address in Email address and its password in Password, then select Sign in.

To use a mail app on your computer or phone, add a new account in the app with the mailbox's full address and password, and let it look up the settings. When it asks for them, copy them from the Mail client setup card on the service's Overview tab: the IMAP name on port 993 with SSL/TLS for incoming mail, and the SMTP name on port 587 with STARTTLS for outgoing mail (Connect a mail app to Mail Hosting).

Send a message from the mailbox to an address you have somewhere else, and reply to it. The reply arrives in the mailbox's inbox.

The domain stays pending with MX points to and a list of hosts

The domain's MX records still name another mail provider. Replace them with the ones on the DNS records card.

The mail app cannot send

Check that it uses port 587 with STARTTLS, or 465 with SSL/TLS. Many networks block port 25. Troubleshoot mail covers the other errors.
